Who is Flinders Island Business Inc?
Flinders Island Business Inc. (FIBI) is the island’s dedicated business organisation, working to strengthen the local economy and support a thriving, sustainable community. FIBI connects local businesses with practical tools, advice, education and opportunities, while providing a collective voice for business and working with government and partners on the issues that matter to Flinders Island.
At its heart, FIBI exists to build the social and financial strength of Flinders Island by supporting local business and creating shared opportunities for long-term prosperity.
-
Flinders Island Business Inc. is led by a volunteer committee of local business owners and community members who bring experience from across the island’s industries. The committee meets regularly to guide FIBI’s priorities, projects and advocacy, working together to strengthen local business and create opportunities for the wider community.
-
Flinders Island’s business organisation has existed in different forms for decades. Originally focused strongly on tourism, it evolved into Flinders Island Business Inc. to represent and support businesses across all industries. Today, FIBI continues that work with a broader focus on economic development, business support, advocacy and community prosperity.
-
Our work is grounded in mutual respect, honesty, accountability, transparency, equity and inclusion, alongside a genuine commitment to caring for our community and environment. We believe strong businesses and a strong community go hand in hand, and that growth should respect the character, people and natural environment of the Furneaux Islands.
-
Like many small regional organisations, one of FIBI’s biggest challenges is capacity. Our committee is made up entirely of volunteers, many of whom are also running businesses, working and raising families. With limited time and resources, we need to be realistic about what we can take on and focus our energy where it can have the greatest impact.
Operating on an island also brings unique challenges for our wider business community, including freight and transport, workforce and housing, access to training and services, and the realities of a small local market. FIBI’s role is not to solve every issue, but to connect, facilitate and advocate — helping businesses access the right resources and creating a stronger collective voice for Flinders Island.
